Latona Fountain Restoration at Versailles, France
Between 2013 and 2015, the Latona Fountain at Versailles underwent an urgent restoration due to structural concerns in the supporting basin. Led by Pierre André Lablaude, chief architect for historic buildings, the project involved the complete dismantling of the fountain for off-site repair. This included restoring 230 marble pieces and re-gilding the lead frog and lizard fixtures.
In this restoration project, Triflex was tasked with addressing the challenges of waterproofing the fountain structure that had experienced significant wear over time. The goal was to provide a durable, long-lasting solution that could withstand constant water exposure while maintaining the fountain’s aesthetic appeal.
The Challenge
The fountain had deteriorated due to years of exposure to water and weather elements. Standard solutions had proven ineffective, with previous materials failing to provide adequate waterproofing. The challenge lay in finding a system that not only protected the structure but also preserved the original design.
Restoration Requirements
Exceptionally durable with dynamic crack-bridging capabilities
Perfect for renovation projects
Provides waterproofing down to the finest details
Fast curing times
Versatile in its application options
The Solution
Triflex, alongside its trusted contractor, conducted an on-site assessment to determine the best approach. The chosen solution was Triflex ProTect and Triflex ProDetail, known for their ability to provide seamless waterproofing even in intricate and complex areas. The systems’s flexibility and crack-bridging properties made them the ideal choice for this project.
The application of Triflex ProTect and Triflex ProDetail began with surface preparation, ensuring optimal adhesion. The systems were applied in layers, creating a seamless, watertight barrier. Special attention was given to joints and detailing areas, which are often the most vulnerable to water ingress.
